In Case I Get Eaten By Wild Hyenas...

Published: Fri, 04/17/15

Hi ,

No, I don't plan on getting eaten by wild hyenas.

But then again, how many people who got eaten
by hyenas ever expected it to happen?

I spent a whole bunch of years working with
high school students.  I love teenagers. They're so
full of life and coolness, even when they're being
pains in the...ya know.

One of their favorite ways of being difficult is to get
dependent on others to get stuff done.  I'd have them
fill out college applications, or their courses for the
next school year, or even just do their homework.

They would ask me how to do something. And that
was often code for, "please do it for me."

I'd tell them what to do...once.

And I'd probably show them also...once.

Then they'd usually ask a bunch of questions that
told me they weren't getting it...and weren't really
trying that hard to get it.

So I'd often they the same thing...

I'm going to show you this, and in case I get eaten
by wild hyenas, it's important you remember.

Yeah, I got the looks you'd imagine I get.

And a bunch of them laughed.

And all of them understood what I was saying.

I was always more interested in giving them the
tools to do for themselves. After all, the job of education
is to give people a certain set of knowledge and skills.

But it's also to help them continue to keep learning,
especially since after a certain point we kick them
out of school.

And, to be perfectly honest...the job of education -
ALL education - is to raise of the next generation of
leaders.

After all, the teachers and the secretaries and the lunch
ladies are all gonna retire.

And the students are gonna run things. We need them
to be smart, bold and not waiting around to be told
what to do every step of the way.

And yeah...if you're any kind of leader now,
you get that.

And if you're a student, ask yourself some
important questions...

Are you actively learning?

Are you positioning yourself to be strong,
independent, in charge of your own destiny?

Are you playing bold, amped up, excited?

If not, are you looking for something to do
that makes you feel that way...even as you're
doing the stuff you need to do to keep your
head above water at the moment?

If the person showing you how to do something was
eaten by wild hyenas, would you be ready to step up?

Get it in gear!

Much Love,
Larry
