2016: The Year Of The FREAK

Or should I say, have an uncomfortable,
itchy, sometimes painful, but inspiring
thrilling and ultimately fulfilling new year!
If you want "happy," it's not that hard a
journey. Just be good to those around you
and do things that keep your head above
water.
Yeah, that worked fine when the world
around us wasn't changing so much.
Still, there are lots of ways to be happy.
You'll find one of them.
For me, and I bet for you too, 2016 is
going to be the year of the FREAK.
Diane and I just got back from four days in
Louisiana with our friends Angel and Ryan.
Angel is a million dollar plus a year earner,
and we were helping them with some marketing
infrastructure.
(Come to find out this morning Ryan is about
to join her, but we'll do that one another time.)
Four days with a woman who not that long
ago was broke, out of an abusive marriage,
no money, holding her family together with duct tape.
Then finding some success, and feeling the burn
from people who didn't like what she was doing
and how she was doing it.
Public ridicule. Public scorn.
And she said, F*** You. I'm doing it anyway.
So when we wake up in a guest room overlooking
Lake Pontchartrain, with the New Orleans skyline
in the background, luxury and grace all around us...
Then have a wild few days in the Big Easy...
And work on some of the most amazing, FUN
marketing I've ever seen...
It's because these guys are FREAKS.
They beat the odds.
They didn't look for an environment of success.
They created one.
Angel said it herself. She held a vision of who she
is and where she belongs.
And when she held it tightly enough, the opportunity
showed up.
And she went after it like a rabid dog.
Without explanations of apologies.
Like a Freak.
Want some of that for yourself?
Decide what you want. For real.
Details aren't important yet. They'll show up along the way.
And when they do, work it as long and as hard as you need to.
Don't explain yourself to anyone, except for your family.
And figure out how to get them to throw down with you.
Yes it IS possible to do that. Diane got me to throw down
with her back in 1999, and I didn't want any part of it
at the time.
Then work. Hard.And have fun doing it.
Let go of what you don't need. And WHO you don't need.
Keep at it. And keep getting better at it.
Be gracious. Or be intense. Or both. Whatever works.
But do it. And do it some more.
Know what that makes you?
A FREAK.
Because damn few of us value our own lives enough
to live that way.
But from first hand experience, the rewards are HUGE.
Yes, the money's great. The first class air travel is great.
The meals, and trips and energy...all great.
The sense of fulfillment...that you're living out your
best self...
There's no topping that.
And none of us know where that goes until we do it.
Like a Freak.
2016 is here.
It's FREAK time.
