President Trump: Three Things I Won't Do

Published: Fri, 01/20/17

It's here.

Donald Trump is the President of the
Untied States.

President Trump.

Get used to it.

It's been about five hours now, at the time
I'm typing these words. So far, the Earth
hasn't fallen off its axis.

And I'm guessing it won't.

There are so many places we could go with
this. I've been reading a lot of stuff, since
I had strong opinions that a Trump administration
would be a bad thing for America.

Here's what I didn't do, and continue not to do...

1. I won't give into resentment of the man,
or of those who supported him, or even those
who gloat about his victory, or taunt Hillary Clinton.

He took advantage of a time in American history
when his style and substance of politics was what
enough people wanted to get him elected.

And maybe had some promotional support from
some foreign friends who wanted him elected.

But that didn't force anyone's hand at the ballot box.

There are people I admire and respect and even love
who voted for President Trump. I strive to understand
their thought process.

It's only right for the personal and professional world
I live in. I'm a counselor and coach and trainer. So I
need to understand how people feel. I want empathy,
even if for a little while.

And as a marketer of my products and services, it's
important that I understand people's wants and needs,
so I can try and fill them with my stuff, if appropriate.

That's a much better option than thinking those who
think differently are ignorant and stupid and corrupt.

2. I Won't Surrender Control Of My Life And
Well Being To President Trump.

When I sat in a room with Gary Vaynerchuck in
New Jersey last April, he said something important.

Regardless of who is president, there are simply too
many things I can do to control my own business.

Yes, there are trade deals on the table that, depending
on what President Trump and his administration do,
may make the labor market better or worse here in the
United States.

And if I were completely dependent on an outside
employer for my livelihood, I would feel like my life
is out of control.

But pretty much everyone who winds up reading my
words or watching my voice knows there are other
ways to be prosperous, secure and abundant in 2017.

All of use know we can learn to find things that are
valuable to people. And we can learn to let enough
people find them so they can buy them from us.

We know we can learn to become more valuable
ourselves, and let the 7 plus billion people in the
world in on it.

We can learn to prosper under any circumstances.

We can work harder, be smarter and see past
whatever adversity we have at the moment.

You can identify problems and offer solutions.

3. I Won't Give Up My Rights As A Citizen To
President Trump.

I better explain that.

I don't think President Trump, or Vice President
Pence, or anyone else is trying to take away my
rights.

I think he won because enough people felt like
they were left behind, and the simplicity of the
message was so powerful, it was easy to get on board.

The hardest part of governing isn't winning elections.
It's actually doing the work once you get elected.

There are many policy platforms of his I disagree with.

I will contribute to the public debate...in ways that
will inspire others to listen.

I will respect those who I disagree with, knowing
that is the best way to influence opinions.

I won't break shop windows with garbage cans.

I won't call him four letter words.

I will respect the office.

I will celebrate what works well and give credit
where it is due.

I will participate in local government. I'll go to public
forums. I'll vote in local and state elections.

I will do the things I do well. I'll be a good citizen.

I'll pay my taxes and try really hard not to get
arrested. No need to put more strain on the
criminal justice system.

I'll be a fully functioning citizen of the United States,
so if and when I rise in opposition to something President
Trump is doing, I'll have the credibility of being
honest and honorable behind me.

President Trump is here.

The Trump administration is here.

So are you.

Like it or not, it's time to bring your A Game to it.

With Respect,
