A Proud Marine (9/11)

Published: Wed, 09/11/19

Two days after the 9/11 attacks that shattered our country.

I was called to jury duty weeks before, and hadn't gotten
notification that it was cancelled. So off I went.

I suppose the courthouse in New Britain, Connecticut
always had a lot of security. Courthouses generally do.

On this day was something I hadn't seen before, though
I've seen it many times since.

A U.S. Marine in dress uniform was standing outside the
entrance. I don't remember if he was armed. But his face
said he was all business.

And I don't know if he volunteered to be there. The U.S.
Constitution says the military isn't allowed to perform
law enforcement functions on U.S. soil, except for military
installations.

But I saw something in him: Pride.

Or maybe that's what I wanted to see.

Either way, in that moment I was proud to be an American.

And if I had been chosen for jury duty, I would have
gladly served.

The rule of law is what makes our country great.

Due process is what makes our country great.

The freedom to disagree without it tearing our
fabric apart is what makes this country great.

And the ability to start with nothing, work hard,
think smart, and become more than your station
in life is what makes this country great.

I'm proud to be part of the home business profession.

And I was proud to be an educator.

Today I celebrate was is great in our country, and what
we have always had the potential to still become.

I wish you joy and prosperity in this life of unlimited
potential.
