R.I.P., Uncle Sam (How To Receive)

No, it's not an essay on a declining America,
especially since I believe America
is about to
experience a new wave of prosperity...
But that's another
story.
When I was 15 years old, there was knock
on the front door of my house.
It was a Suffolk County Police Officer.
He asked if my parents were home.
He wouldn't say why he wanted them.
He was holding a clipboard in his hand.
I looked down and saw the name Sam Hessell.
That was my grandfather's brother...my great uncle.
Uncle Sam lived in Los Angeles, while the rest of
the family was in New York. We had met him for
the first time a couple of years before, on a family
trip out to California.
He was estranged from the rest of the family.
He and my grandfather had some kind of fight
and hadn't spoken to each other in more than
20 years.
So it was great meeting him then. We knew he
was lonely. but
We had no idea he would list us as the next
of kin if something happened to him.
And that's what it was. I put two and two together
and figured out Uncle Sam had died.
The officer didn't want me to know. I suppose
that was the policy...not to tell kids about
dead relatives.
But he also didn't hold the clipboard where
it was safe from my prying eyes.
I handled it fine. He was just an old man I met
once, though apparently we meant more to him.
That's where I'm going with this...
We are capable of so much more than we ask
of ourselves on a daily basis.
And those who challenge themselves to do more,
to become more...they rule the world.
Or at least they get the best parts
and have the most fun.
We shouldn't "puke" on people.
We don't want to give them more
than they can handle.
We should give them big bites of new
things to learn, new things to do, new ways to be...
Just a little more than they can handle.
Let them grow into a new reality while not getting
totally overwhelmed.
And respect their ability to take in more than
YOU might think they're ready for...
Or YOU are ready to teach them.
If you see someone as more than they're
showing, they have a funny way of living up to it.

Because there is no way you see people in light

You see yourself strong, slim, full of sexy muscles.
You see yourself as confident, compassionate,
commanding.
You see yourself in a relationship filled with mutual
love, honor respect.
And dare I say excitement and passion?
You see yourself getting up in the morning
excited about what the day will bring.
You see yourself going to bed at night with gratitude
and peace about the day you just lived.
You see yourself - as Emily described it -
in light of your full potential.
It's what we do.
It's the culture I build around
It's the world I invite you to enter.
And build your own reality around.
Not airy-fairy.
Not bumper sticker slogan, fortune cookie drivel.
Real.
Results.
