Father's Day Fun!

I do enjoy myself a Father's Day!

Two daughters, now 19 and 17 who know
how to get creative...it's usually pretty fun.

And I like knowing I had a part in the whole thing.
I wasn't a perfect father, by any means. But I did my best.

And two happy, well adjusted young adults later,
well I guess I did something right.

Anyway, it got me thinking about the role of a father.
Jim Rohn used to say mothers nurture and fathers protect.

Sounds about right.

It's the biological role that fathers play in most species.
And because humans evolved past other animals (we think),
we get to take on both roles...or neither.

I spent lots of time nurturing my daughters, playing, loving,
having fun. Kissing boo boos, making lunches, etc.

And that was in a two parent household with a wife
who is a magnificent mother.

I was also the protector.

There were a few times I felt like I had to physically protect
my family. It wasn't something I thought about.
That's my treasure. Someone or something threatens them,
all bets are off.

And of course the more mundane but important providing for them...
financially, emotionally, spiritually, physically.

The usual stuff. Bringing home the bacon, killing bugs when they
show up where they're not supposed to. Cleaning flooded basements.

Learning from mistakes. Had plenty of practice with that one!

And dealing with the occasional teacher or other adult who did
my kids dirty. No big deal.

Here's the point...

Fatherhood means a lot of things. It means making a commitment
to take care of a family you brought into the world. That doesn't
mean you do it perfectly. It means you do your best, roll with the
punches, and give the kids room to grow.

Kinda like anything else that's important to you.

Are you a dad? Cool!  Happy Father's Day!  Let 'em take care of you.

Not a dad? Find something that's important enough to make
a rock solid, unbreakable commitment to.

And be a father to it.

Got a homemade breakfast callin'!

Much Love,
Larry
